Big Grass Fire Status - Wednesday (8/5/2026)

The Big Grass Fire grew moderately Tuesday. The picture above shows yesterdays fire border in dark red and the present burning fire and overnight growth in orange. The ranch cabin at Wickiup, where the below webcam pictures originate is located at the yellow dot just below the old Rosie fire burn scare from 2024 - in the middle right of the picture. As you can see from the webcam pictures below, much work is being done to protect the ranch cabin. We will try to keep you up-to-date as the fire burns our ranch grazing area and approaches the Wickiup cabin.

Although the fire is not immediately threatening our Wickiup Cabin, the fire is progressing north from Mud Flat Road and is still threatening our smaller site at Bull Basin. That location is shown as a second yellow dot in the bottom right of the map. Yesterday and last night the fire moved to very close to CO where we have a stock pond for our cattle. CO is about half way between Wickiup and Bull Basin. This burning area includes some of our private ranch land and some of grazing allotment land. At this point we don't know if any cattle have been lost, but our grazing feed is burning.

The northern arm of the fire near Triangle is still threatening and is burning in difficult terrain; making it a challenge for fire fighters. The fire fighters are putting in containment lines and may use back fires today to try and stop this southeasterly growth into our ranch.

The Big Grass Fire has now burned nearly 360,000 arces, and 959 personell are on the fire - an increase of 120 from Monday. The Big Grass Fire has been pretty much contained in Oregon, so most efforts are now on our eastern side of the fire. See the overall fire map to the right. A new fire fighters base camp has been setup off Mud Flat Road; moving most of the support from Vale to the Idaho side of the fire, so the fire fighters are closer to the hot spots.
