Big Grass Fire Status - Monday Morning (8/10/2026)

The Big Grass Fire had a very difficult night. The fire moved to the west edge of the Wickiup meadow threatening the cabin. The webcam pictures below show the heavy smoke from the fire just behind the cabin.The map above shows todays fire border in dark red and the present burning fire and overnight growth in orange. The ranch cabin at Wickiup, where the below webcam pictures originate is located at the yellow dot just below the old Rosie fire burn scare from 2024 - in the middle right of the picture. As you can see from the webcam pictures below, much work is being done to protect the ranch cabin. We will try to keep you up-to-date as the fire burns our ranch grazing area and approaches the Wickiup cabin. Temperatures continue to be hight, although the trend is down, and humidity is low causing a hindrance to the fire fighters in the next few days. This burning area between the north and south burning areas shown on the map includes most of our private ranch land and grazing allotment land. At this point we don't know if any cattle have been lost, but our grazing feed is burning.

The fire is now seriously threatening the Wickiup Cabin. Unfortunately we don't have a picture of the fire now on the west side of the cabin, but a picture posted by the fire fighters shows a picture in Mud Flat from last week that can give you the idea of what is happening at Wickiup. This picture was taken along the road into Wickiup. See it on the right.

Bull Basin area,shown as a second yellow dot in the bottom right of the map above also has the fire at its doorstep.

Hot, dry conditions, along with gusty afternoon winds, caused the fire to jump across the containment lines, causing the fire to continue to burn into our ranch. The forcast is for the potential for thunderstorms later in the week with the increased potential for higher winds. At this point the northern and mid arm of the fire are now coming together right over our ranch.

The fire fighers generally seem to think this will help them get better control over the fire. Unfortunately with the present fire prognosis for our ranch land is not good and we could end up lossing nearly all of our present grazing land to the fire.

The map to the left shows the Wickiup meadow and how close the fire hot spots (orange dots) are to the cabin this morning. The Cabin location is shown as the black dot at the top of the map. The next day is going to be a challenge for Wickiup. The burned area, from the fire two nights ago at the south end of the Wickiup meadow, is shown in the pink area at the bottom of the map.

The Big Grass Fire has now burned over 554,000 arces, and 1214 personnel are now on the fire. The Big Grass Fire is now about 41% contained, but mostly in Oregon. See the overall fire map to the right. The very southern end of the fire was the most active right now, and the fire fighters set a number of back fires.

Once they get the fire around Mud Flat and Wickiup controlled, the major portion of the fire fighters will be focused on the most southern arm of the fire. At the moment this branch of the fire is not threatening our ranch or our grazing land.
