The Big Grass Fire had a mixed day and night. Unfortunately, more bad than good. The picture above shows todays fire border in dark red and the present burning fire and overnight growth in orange. The ranch cabin at Wickiup, where the below webcam pictures originate is located at the yellow dot just below the old Rosie fire burn scare from 2024 - in the middle right of the picture. As you can see from the webcam pictures below, much work is being done to protect the ranch cabin. We will try to keep you up-to-date as the fire burns our ranch grazing area and approaches the Wickiup cabin. Unfortunately temperatures are on the rise and humidity is low causing a hindrance to the fire fighters in the next few days. This burning area between the north and south burning areas shown on the map includes most of our private ranch land and grazing allotment land. At this point we don't know if any cattle have been lost, but our grazing feed is burning.
The fire is now only a few miles from our Wickiup Cabin, moving
north from the Mud Flat Road. The fire is clearly now threatening our main ranch property. See the picture on the
left
with the retardant air drop three days ago.
Our presently threatened smaller Bull Basin ranch location is shown as a second yellow dot in the bottom right of the map.
Yesterday the fire at Mud Flat continued moving north toward Wickiup. Hot, dry conditions, along with gusty afternoon winds, caused the fire to jump across the containment line near Josephine Road, causing the fire to continue to burn into our ranch; burning along the access road into Wickiup from Mud flat. The increasing smoke from the approaching fire can be seen in the recent webcam pictures. There has been heavy air drops of retardant between the fire and Wickiup, as fire fighters attempt to stop the northern movement toward Wickiup.
The northern arm of the fire near Triangle did provide a slight bit of good news, but is still threatening and is
burning in difficult terrain. Yesterday, fire fighters made some progress on the eastern movement on
this branch of the fire.
The Big Grass Fire has now burned over 472,000 arces, and 1221 personell are now on the fire. The Big Grass Fire is now 41% contained, but mostly in Oregon. See the overall fire map to the right. A new fire fighters base camp has been setup off Mud Flat Road; moving most of the support from Vale to the Idaho side of the fire, so the fire fighters are closer to the hot spots. The very southern end of the fire was the most active yesterday, and the fire fighters set a number of back fires. At the moment this branch of the fire is not threatening our ranch or our grazing land.
